Honest Review : Subjects of BE (Computer)

Share this post Share this post Share this post

With most of the colleges commencing their academic year 2016-17 from this week, students of BE are on the verge of facing a very memorable year! Each year the pressure of scoring good marks increases, so it is obvious that the FINAL YEAR is very much important from the perspective of achieving good marks.
Each one of you wants to bid goodbye to the college with a distinction or a first class at-least and of-course no backlogs!!

Here I am, I will be providing you guys with some insights regarding the subjects and their difficulty level so that one can plan and try to focus on the subjects they might feel are difficult.
So for those of you who haven't gone through the syllabus and the ones who find difficulty in searching the syllabus on the university website can click here.

This is to bring a kind note to all my readers that  the points expressed below are based on my experiences. None of the points given below are intended towards hurting anyone’s sentiments whatsoever.

Lets begin with an honest review of the subjects BE(computer) guys will be facing....

Design and Analysis of Algorithms (DAA)

Do you like solving problems? like to use your brain? if yes! this is the subject you will love.
Well, describing DAA in simple words will be Discrete Structures (DS) + Data Structures and Problem Solving(DSPS) + lots of algorithms! Diploma students need to put in the extra effort, as most of them struggle with such subjects.

This is the perfect subject to  improve your scoring. With little bit of practice and understandability, one can score around  55-60 marks in the End-sem.

Difficulty level  - 3 out of 5.
Books to refer -  You can download the reference book here .
Now this is the untold rule of engineering, "A true Engineer never uses Reference Book". So lets talk about which textbook to use/buy.
I would recommend Technical publication for DAA. Technical is good and covers the portion pretty well. Except for the problems on Knapsack, technical provides good material.

Principles of Modern Compiler Design (PMCD)

Well there is another untold truth of engineering, "There is one subject every semester which becomes a pain in the a$$" .If you feel that DSPA or TOC was the worst you've faced, then I have some bad news for you. This subject takes difficulty to whole new level, take this subject lightly and you lower your chances of having an ALL CLEAR tag!

Difficulty level  - 4.5 out of 5.
Books to refer -  You can download the reference book here .
Technical publication once again proves to be a better option for PMCD. Attend the PMCD lectures regularly, that will surely help you in the long run.

Smart System Design and Applications(SSDA)

People who are interested in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, I present you SSDA! A good subject overall, theoretical as well as logical. If you understand the concept well, a score between 50-55 out of 70 is manageable. Chances of getting a backlog for this subject is very low, that doesn't mean you can neglect this subject.

Difficulty level  - 3.5 out of 5.
Books to refer -  You can download the reference book here.
I would recommend both Technical and Techmax for SSDA. Techmax proves good for insem exam, while Technical is a mini reference book and its a mini version of University recommended book "Artifi cial Intelligence: A Modern Approach". So I leave the decision on you regarding the textbook.

Elective I : Data Mining Techniques and Applications (DMTA)

Things can get pretty dicey with this subject! It includes problems, theory and data mining algorithms. Interesting subject, most of the people will enjoy this subject. Again, this subject comes handy in improving the scoring. Let me warn you in the first place there will be sums on Market-Basket analysis, Apriori algorithm, Naive Bayes classification, Clustering, etc.

Don't get alarmed, the concepts related to these topics are quite easy and pretty interesting. It is an easy yet a difficult subject, requires practice of sums and very good understanding of the concepts.

Difficulty level  - 4 out of 5.
Books to refer -  You can download the reference book here .
I would recommend book of  Techmax publication for DMTA, just because I had one.

Elective II: Pervasive Computing

Closely related to IOT. All you need is imagination and ability to create answers *Winks*
Application based subject and the question paper will also be application based, you can score pretty decent in this subject.

Difficulty level  - 3 out of 5.
Books to refer -  You can download the reference book here .
Both Technical and Techmax are confusing and won't be helpful. If you don't like studying from reference book then go for Techmax.

I highly recommend the use of Reference Books, as they have proper and in-depth content.

In the next blog, I will try to provide insights regarding PROJECT WORK: DO'S and DONT'S
With this I sign off and hope that this blog proves helpful and manages to provide clarity regarding the subjects.
